Surfboard Leash history:
The surfboard leash has always been a problematic tool since it was first introduced back in 1971. Not so affectionately coined
the “kook cord,” the invention of the leg rope (or leash) also coincided with the tube ride’s rise to prominence in the surfer’s
reportoire. Surfing’s first leashes were not ideal since they were made from surgical tubing and would snap back with dangerous consequences. It wasn’t until urethane was used in surfboard leash construction that the modern leash was born.
Surfboard Leash Correct length advice:
Your leash needs to be at least as long as your board. This allows enough room between you and your board when you take a mullering. If your leash is too short, you’ll find yourself hitting your board or being hit with your board. Keep in mind that
some manufacturers will list the length of the leash as the cord length and not include the cuff or the rail saver. Ask at your
surf shop before buying to make sure.
